SYKES: 55th wedding anniversary

MARTINS FERRY – Harry and Fran Sykes celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on Sept. 7. They were united in marriage in 1957 in Martins Ferry First Presbyterian Church, with the late Dr. Robert Clark officiating. They have been members of the Church for their entire marriage. Both have served as Elders and Harry has also served as Deacon and Trustee. Fran was Church Treasurer for 17 years.

Sykes is the son of the late Oscar and Goldie Brown Sykes of Bellaire. He is a veteran of the armed forces and spent many years as Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 51 in Martins Ferry, and also served on many Scouting committees, including Scoutmaster of a contingent of Scouts attending the National Jamboree in 1981. He retired from American Electric Power, Cardinal Plant in 1991 after more than 37 years of service. His wife, Fran, is the daughter of the late Julius and Anna Vargo Colman of Martins Ferry. She worked at Tidd Plant, Brilliant, where they met. She was also a receptionist for Dr. R.A. Raimonde, Martins Ferry.

They are parents of a son, David, who is Asst. Council Executive of LaSalle Council, Boy Scouts of America, South Bend, Ind. and a daughter, Mary, who is Theater Technical Director of Goucher College, Baltimore, Md.
