Valley Hospice honors veterans
WHEELING – Valley Hospice celebrated the Memorial Day holiday with a patriotic music performance and reception during which five military veterans received special pins to honor them for their service to the nation.
Volunteers Nikki Harder and Kara Conners presented a lively selection of patriotic American music for more than 30 patients, families and friends at Valley Hospice’s Liza’s Place, Care Center South in Wheeling.
“Recognizing the contributions of the men and women of all military service branches is our way of showing how much we honor these valiant citizens,” commented Andrea Stoll, vice-president of access at Valley Hospice and co-chairperson of its We Honor Veterans program.
Stoll also noted that expanding its expertise in the care of veterans with life-limiting illnesses represents an expansion of the mission of Valley Hospice in the Ohio Valley. Focusing on the unique needs of veterans is embodied in every aspect of the services provided by Valley Hospice, including the volunteer department which hosted the special evening honoring the veterans at Liza’s Place.
Valley Hospice is a national partner of We Honor Veterans, a pioneering campaign developed by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization in collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs to help provide care and support to the men and women who have served in the military. Currently, Valley Hospice staff members are working towards Level II recognition through veteran-centric education and identification of patients with military service. There are four levels of recognition as part of the program, according to Debbie Barto, director of volunteers at Valley Hospice.
The We Honor Veterans campaign provides tiered recognition to organizations that demonstrate a systematic commitment to improving care for veterans. Partners can assess their ability to serve veterans and, using resources provided as part of the campaign, integrate the best practices for providing end-of-life care to veterans into their organization.
