Treasure from the back of the closet

MARTINS FERRY Angela Quinn noticed a few things before deciding to open Calliope Consignment in town.

First, the Ohio Valley had a few popular consignment shops, but none resided within the Purple City.

Second, Quinn noticed her kids outgrew the clothes she bought long before the attire’s usage date.

“We’ve always shopped at the local shops and my kids have always outgrown their clothes a lot faster than they wear them out,” Quinn said. “I thought this would be something fun to do.

“I wanted to do something to benefit the community as well as myself and Martins Ferry doesn’t have anywhere specifically to shop for children’s clothing.”

Thus, Calliope Consignment was born.

Located on South Fourth Street in the plaza across from the old Stromboli’s, Calliope is open Monday through Sunday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Quinn has some friends and relatives help her occasionally inside the store. But for the most part, it’s a one-woman operation.

Ideally, she’d like to hire some help once business picks up a bit more. Or, at minimum, select one day per week to close.

She’s studying the figures, but hasn’t determined which would be the best day.

“I don’t want to just pick a day at random,” Quinn said. “I’m waiting to figure out the best pattern. A lot of the other shops are closed on Mondays but I’ve done fairly well on Mondays so I’m not sure.”

The premise of the shop is simple. Have some children’s clothing or toys you’d like to sell? Bring them in clean and folded and whatever price Quinn sells the items for, you’ll receive half.

“If it’s not clean or if it’s wrinkly, it’s a lot harder to sell,” Quinn said. “I don’t have time to rewash everything I take in.”

Currently Quinn’s inventory consists of a multitude of items in the infant and toddler sizes. There is a small selection of junior up to adult-sized clothing. That should change eventually.

“We’ll build up some of the bigger sizes, but right now, we have a ton of children’s clothing for the summer,” Quinn said. “The inventory is constantly changing and every day I get new stuff in.”

Prices are based on brand, condition of the item and its age. But even for brand name apparel, Quinn notes her customers will see a considerable savings over other stores.

Aside from clothing, there is also a small but growing selection of toys, DVDs, games and other kid-related items. There is also a selection of crafted items.

Quinn occasionally gets in larger items, like a bassinet.

She’ll update her Facebook regularly with any new or hot items she gets into the store. It can be found by searching for Calliope Consignment. She can also be reached at (740) 633-6163.
