Finally, a salon of her own

ST. CLAIRSVILLE – Sometimes when opportunity knocks, you have to take a chance and open the door.

That’s exactly what Fairpoint resident Diane Pinkston did a few months ago. A long time hair stylist, Pinkston dreamed of opening a salon of her own. When the opportunity arose at a great location in a busy St. Clairsville plaza, she jumped at the chance to make her dream a reality.

On June 4, Pinkston opened her salon Clips-n-Colors, but it certainly didn’t come without a lot of hard work. The building that Clips-n-Colors now occupies was a salon previously, but Pinkston still wanted to remodel and put her own touch on the business. Her vision was to create a relaxing environment where customers could feel comfortable. The goal was to open a salon that felt like an upscale, out-of-area salon without the out-of-area expense.

With the help and support of family and friends, Pinkston began the remodeling process in early May. “If it wasn’t for the support from my wonderful family and friends, I never could have pulled this off,” Pinkston said, noting how everyone pitched in scraping wallpaper, bringing food to the salon and helping run errands during the remodeling process.

Clips-n-Colors is a full service hair salon offering stylish, modern haircuts for men, women and children, hair color, perms, foils, roller sets, facial waxing, and updos for all occasions. Unique to the salon are the nature of the products they use and offer. “I wanted to step out of the box and use products that were organic, vegan or sulfate-free,” Pinkston said.

The salon uses All-Nutrient organic, 100 percent vegan hair color. Organic colors allow for better color and better feeling hair after the process, according to Pinkston. In addition, Clips-n-Colors is the only salon in the area to carry the full line of ThermaFuse styling products. This hair care system is phosphate and sulfur free and is designed to help repair hair abused by hairdryers and heated styling tools. Both product lines are made in the USA.

Another unique feature offered by Clips-n-Colors is a drying, processing and coloring room. Located in the back of the salon, this room will be a private area for customers waiting on perms or hair color to process. Customers can enjoy complimentary coffee, read a magazine and relax without having to feel self-conscious. “It’s a place to hide when you ‘look your best’,” Pinkston said with a laugh.

Joining Pinkston are stylists Joyce Brown, Amanda Bear and Brianne “Bri” Winters. Pinkston and Brown worked together previously, and Brown worked with both Bear and Winters. Together the group has nearly 70 years of experience, and each individual stylist has up-to-date education and training. The four work happily as a team, and Pinkston says she values their opinions and wants them to be as comfortable there as she is.

Pinkston also receives support from her husband, Brent, who helped out in a big way during remodeling and still stops by the salon “at least once a day.” Their daughters Darian and Carina, along with friend Emily Vickers, also help out around the salon taking phone calls and appointments, running errands, and doing laundry. Pinkston finds their help immeasurable because their assistance allows the stylists to focus on their customers in the salon.

Clips-n-Colors will hold its grand opening on Sunday, July 29 at the salon from 3-6 p.m. Light refreshments will be served and several prizes will be given away.

For Pinkston, watching her dream become a reality has felt more like it was her destiny all along. “This is where God put me,” she said. “This is where I’m supposed to be.”
