Middle College program receives funding
WHEELING – West Virginia Northern Community College recently received at check for $51,000 from JP Morgan Chase & Co.
The check was presented to West Virginia Northern Community College on Jan. 29 at the WVNCC campus in Wheeling.
The money will go towards the scholarships for college tuition and textbooks for students that are in the Middle College High School Program at WVNCC.
“This generous commitment by Chase will benefit many of our Middle College High School students who have demonstrated they can successfully complete college courses,” said Dr. Martin J. Olshinsky, WVNNC’s president said. “With a vibrant program on the Wheeling campus and the program’s expansion to the Weirton campus, demand for college credit courses has increased dramatically and so has the need for additional scholarships.”
The Middle College High school Program began in 2009 and allows students from Brooke, Ohio and Marshall counties to attend high school classes at WVNCC. The Weirton campus added this program this year and there are plans for New Martinsville campus to adopt the program as well.
“JP Morgan Chase is proud to join West Virginia in expanding access to high quality education programs for at-risk students,” said Cinnamon Pelly, vice president of global philanthropy. “Middle College provides critical academic, social and emotional support to students to help them graduate from high school, college and career ready.”
The state of West Virginia does not allow WVNCC to waive tuition for the students that are participating in the Middle College program and all scholarships must come from outside sources.
“I’m excited about the opportunity for Chase to support an extremely important Middle College at WVNCC,” said Brad Blair, vice president and business banker at Chase in Wheeling. “The whole team at WVNCC should be commended for having the foresight, fortitude and commitment to the Middle College and pursuing what is needed to keep students in a learning environment.”
