Vintage Cottage offering unique home decor
WHEELING – The Vintage Cottage, now open at 2263 Market Street in Wheeling, offers a whimsical mixture of vintage and new for home decor.
Owner Amy Cordy has worked as a teacher for 21 years, the last five of which she has spent in her hometown of Bellaire. She also sold and continues to sell It Works!, a line of health and wellness products, as an independent distributor. Cordy said that around April of last year, she was asked what she would do if she earned a company bonus for sales. She replied that she would open a shop at Centre Market, but didn’t take the question seriously. After earning the bonus, Cordy’s dream became more realistic.
She says the location is perfect.
“I just kind of fell into this spot,” she said.
Cordy had a number of ideas for the name of the shop, and she put them up on Facebook for her friends to offer opinions. After narrowing her choices down to two, Cordy put them in a hat on pieces of paper to pull one out at random and Vintage Cottage emerged victorious over Little Birds.
Vintage Cottage, which opened in April, offers a variety of home decor items such as large and small furniture, mirrors, suitcases, and other home and garden accessories. Cordy also sells jewelry made by local artists. While only two artists are currently selling their wares, Cordy said she hopes to find more. She also offers consignment options.
Cordy also sells Miss Lillian No-Wax Chock Paint in a variety of colors, which she personally uses to paint furniture. She is planning to host Paint and Sip workshops with the creator of Miss Lillian paint soon.
Cordy finds her shop’s items “all over the place,” from eBay and Facebook to yard sales, auctions and flea markets.
“This is what I’ve always decorated with at home. It’s what I’ve always liked, the shabby-vintage decor, mixing old with new. So I basically just put things in the shop that I would want in my house.”
Cordy runs the shop with help from her husband Steve, but no employees.
“He has been so supportive. I couldn’t do this without him,” Cordy said.
She says it’s been a dream so far, operating a shop in Centre Market and meeting new people from different areas. Feedback has been positive.
“I’ve had a lot of people tell me that they love the shop, that it’s different. There’s really not a shop like it around here,” Cordy said. “I’ve already gotten some regular customers.”
