BRIDGEPORT — A longtime fixture in Bridgeport recently expanded its business to a new base.

Wilson Furniture has acquired the building next door to the business on Lincoln Avenue in Bridgeport, and recently opened Wilson’s Mattress 1st, a mattress business. The store opened to the public on March 18, allowing customers to come in and browse their selections of mattresses.

“Opening the Mattress 1st store continues our tradition of offering the best price and the best service to our customer,” said owner Jason Wilson.

Wilson said the building was previously the corporate headquarters of Scott Lumber until the late 1990s, when it was acquired by Interim Health Care, which serves several counties in eastern Ohio out of the building. Wilson said he and his wife, Leah, were offered the chance to purchase the building in August 2016, and were eager to take the opportunity.

“It all just kind of fell into place,” Wilson said.

Wilson’s immediately set about refurbishing the store, utilizing several local companies to paint, install LED light fixtures, and clean up the first floor and small adjoining garage. The first floor is now the mattress showroom, and Wilson said the garage will be used to store their stock when more is acquired. Interim Health Care is relocated to the second floor of the building, while the top two floors are vacant for now. Wilson said that in addition to using local contractors to fix up the store, all of the mattresses available for sale were manufactured in Ohio.

“We want to support the people who support us,” he said.

Wilson’s family was on hand at the store Saturday, as well as several employees of Wilson Furniture, to celebrate the opening of the new location. After being treated to a brief tour of the location and learning the history of the building, guests joined Jason and his family in cutting a ceremonial ribbon. Wilson thanked everyone for attending, saying that their efforts have all been greatly appreciated, and he hopes to keep the enthusiasm moving forward with the new business.

“It’s another step toward our goal of being the best furniture store in the valley,” Wilson said. “We have a lot to offer here.”

The store offers Serta, Simmons, iComfort, Mattress 1st, and Restonic brand mattresses. In addition, the store will offer offer a test area to customers, with a mock bedroom set up in the back of the store where customers can try out different mattresses and bedding before making a final purchase. Wilson added that the store will have a larger grand opening, most likely in early April.

Wilson Furniture has been a staple of Bridgeport for over a century. According to the store website, the store was founded in 1898 by Charles Adolph, a German immigrant to the area. Adolph was eventually joined in business by his son-in-law, Howard Wilson, prompting the change in name. Howard continued to run the store until his death, and the business has stayed in the family since, with operations now being headed by Jason Wilson, Adolph’s great-great-grandson.
