Homestyle cooking keeps diners coming back to Schlepp’s

MORRISTOWN — It’s that signature homestyle cooking that keeps customers returning for more at Schlepp’s Family Restaurant just off the Interstate 70 exit near Morristown.
Whether it’s the rotisserie chicken or dry rub ribs or a three-egg omelet for breakfast — its their homestyle cooking and family-friendly atmosphere that makes Schlepp’s such a popular stop, according to owners Mary Ann and Rusty Lucas of Bethesda.
“We give big portions out, you have plenty to eat, and you don’t leave hungry,” said Rusty Lucas. They run weekly specials, including their chicken fricassee and pot pork, which is offered on Sunday. Other menu favorites include: baked or deep-fried cod, spaghetti, roast beef, meatloaf, chili pork chops, tuna salad, chicken salad, fresh burgers, and macaroni and potato salads. The large breakfast menu is another draw for customers, according to Lucas.
“We are noted for our omelets. We have a big three-egg omelet,” he said. Lucas said about 75 percent of their business is from local residents.
Maryann Lucas said she began working at the restaurant back in 1990, and it wasn’t until 2001 that she and her husband decided to purchase it.
They said it truly is a family restaurant as their son, Randy, started working at the restaurant many years ago as a teenager and continues working there today.
She said their homemade bread has continues to be very popular with their customers, whether it’s served on the side with lunch or dinner or served as toast or French toast with breakfast selections. In addition, they are adding their fresh strawberry pie to the menu on weekends throughout the summer.
