Shadyside prepares to welcome new store

SHADYSIDE — The village of Shadyside is preparing to welcome a new business to the community, as Dollar General expands with a new location.

Dollar General provides food, household items and other basic goods and necessities to shoppers at affordable prices. The stores are popular stops when someone needs an affordable item quickly. The store dates back to 1955, according to its website, when J.L. Turner opened a store with the novel idea that no item would be cost more than $1. The idea quickly grew, with the store making more than $5 million in annual sales within two years. The company has continued to grow ever since, with the business now operating more than 13,000 stores in 43 different states, with the core values of good service and affordable merchandise staying relatively unchanged since its founding.

In the local area, there are a dozen Dollar General stores with locations in Wheeling, Benwood, Martins Ferry, Bellaire, Morristown, Barnesville, Neffs and more with another new store planned for Flushing. The continued growth and success of the company is noteworthy, as several larger businesses such as Kmart, Elder-Beerman and hhgregg have either gone out of business or moved away from the area in the past several months. The success might be due to Dollar General stores being located in convenient areas, equally accessible to those who need to run in and grab a few items as to those who need to take their time and go down a longer shopping list. The model helps the stores thrive in communities, some of which are very small or rural. Dollar General has enjoyed a loyal customer base in Belmont County since the first store opened in the county in Martins Ferry almost 25 years ago.

Residents shouldn’t have to wait too long for the new Shadyside location to be open, according to company spokeswoman Laura Somerville. Somerville said via email that the store should be open by mid-fall, barring any delays in construction. Once open, the Dollar General will provide the community with six to 10 new jobs, she said. Anyone interested can apply online at dollargeneral.com/careers. Somerville said the location of the new store was carefully considered, as the company seeks to serve customers within around a 10-minute drive.
