Bait shop celebrating 15 years of business
LAFFERTY — R&M Live Bait, located at 42804 1/2 Buckeye St., Lafferty, is celebrating 15 years of business this year.
The shop is owned by Mary Briggs and managed by Richard Coe. The couple lives right beside the shop, which offers live bait and a variety of fishing accessories.
“We have most all live bait — minnies, nightcrawlers, meal worms, wax worms, maggots, gold fish, suckers … and gold fish to put in ponds,” Coe said.
The shop also sells a variety of lures, such as vibrating lures, sinkers, hooks, bobbers, curley tails, in addition to other fishing equipment, like fishing poles.
Coe noted the business sort of started “by accident” 15 years ago this past April. Coe and his friends would often get cabin fever in the winter, and it was suggested to him that he should start a bait shop as a hobby of sorts.
“It started pretty good … and the business took off,” Coe said. “I plan to be in business as long as remain in good health. I’m 72 and I hope to go another 15 or 20 years before I jump the ditch.”
Coe noted he and Briggs’ enjoy their customers.
“We seem to be well liked. … People like the way they get treated here; we’re not here to make money,” Coe said.
R&M is open 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week and on holidays, too.
“I like to fish myself. I’ve fished all my life. … I don’t know what other kids did in the summertime, but if you wanted to find me you could just go down to the (McMahon) creek where I was fishing,” he said.
