St. C Alumni Association names Alumnus of the Year
The St. Clairsville High School Alumni Association honors a Distinguished Alumnus every year, and this year is no exception. On July 26, 2014, the Alumni Association will hold its 22nd annual picnic at the JB Martin Recreation Center in St. Clairsville. The festivities will start at 11 a.m. and the association will be honoring Dr. Lowell H. Keppel.
Dr. Lowell Keppel graduated from St. Clairsville High School in 1970. He earned his B.S. degree in mathematics from Yale College in 1974 and his M.D. degree from Boston University School of Medicine in 1978. He received his post-doctoral training in Family Medicine at the Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Oregon. He is board certified in Family Medicine (1981) and in 2000 he successfully completed additional training as a Certified Physician Executive (CPE) from the American College of Physician Executives.
Dr. Keppel has filled several diverse positions in the health care industry during his career, from practicing for 15 years as a Family Physician (including delivering scores of babies) to his leadership roles as VP/Medical Director with prominent health care organizations.
In 2007, he was elected by his peers to lead the Wisconsin Academy of Family Physicians as its President and Chairman of the Board of Directors, the first full-time physician executive accorded that honor. In addition to serving on the WAPP Board for almost 20 years, he has also served on the Boards of Directors of the Wisconsin Medical Society, the Waukesha County Medical Society, and the Aurora Family Services.
Dr. Keppel met his future wife ( “B” nee Betty Jo Garvin – also a 1970 graduate) in St. Clairsville Middle School. They were married in 1973, and have three children: Drew, a Ph.D. in Physics from Caltech University, Alexander, a Pharm. D. from Chicago State University, and Cecily, currently studying in a doctoral program in Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mathematics at UC San Diego.
