Welding training openings available at Eastern Gateway

STEUBENVILLE – Eastern Gateway Community College will begin another training class for welding on July 21 to answer the demand in the growing oil and gas industry as well as other industries.

The non-credit basic program runs 10 weeks and the intermediate to advanced program runs another 10 weeks.

Unemployed Ohio residents or someone displaced from a job in Ohio may qualify for program costs through the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) administered by OhioMeansJobs Jefferson County. The cost of the basic program is $5,000 and for the advance program the cost is $7,500.

The deadline for registration for the programs that are offered in the welding lab at the Jefferson Campus in Steubenville is July 19, call 740.264.5591 x1910. To determine WIA eligibility, contact OhioMeansJobs Jefferson County at 740.282.0971 x139.

The demand for welders is increasing in numerous industries, including construction, manufacturing, natural gas, power generation, and utilities. Workers who possess basic skills for welding can easily shift from one industry to another depending on where they are needed most.

All welding programs at Eastern Gateway provide the skill preparation required for AWS and other industry certifications. Student progress in welding classes depends entirely on individual effort and ability. Welding instructors are AWS Certified Welding Instructors (CWI/CWE), who come from various industries with a broad range of experience in the welding field.

The basic Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) Program begins with the fundamentals and provides students with an in-depth understanding of essential welding requirements and techniques including electrode classification, weld defects, visual inspection, weld bead size, welding symbols, weld nomenclature, blueprint reading and basic metallurgy. Training is provided in all weld positions, on mild steel with single and multi-pass welds. Structural covers single V-groove welds on carbon steel with multi-pass welds in all positions with backing. Pre-pipe and pipe advances the student into single V-groove welds with open root on carbon steel with multi-pass welds in all positions.

Building upon the skill sets learned in Basic Welding, the Intermediate to Advanced Program begins with advanced processes in Stick, MIG and TIG using both steel plate and introducing steel pipe. Training is provided in all weld positions, on steel plate and pipe with single and multi-pass welds. Pipe advances the student into single V-groove welds with open root on carbon steel with multi-pass welds in all positions. The student will have the opportunity to concentrate on processes with the goal of achieving certification on pipe as per Section IX of the ASME Code.
