Bellaire High School graduation set

BELLAIRE — Bellaire High School will hold its 138th graduation ceremony at 2 p.m. May 28 in the Alumni Auditorium. Dave Liberati, a 1975 graduate of Bellaire High School, will be the speaker.

Valedictorians for the Class of 2017 are Abbey Cusick and Sloane Porter.

∫ Cusick is the daughter of Ron and Kellie Cusick. Her grade point average is 4.100.

Cusick has received the following honors and awards: Principal’s list/honor roll (four years), honors diploma, homecoming queen, National Honor Society president, student council president, student of the month, American Legion Auxiliary Buckeye Girls State delegate, Wheeling Youth Leadership Conference delegate, Bellaire Sons of Italy Lodge scholarship, Belmont County Franklin B. Walter Scholars Award, Elks District Student of the Year, Elks Legacy Award winner, Lions Club Science Award, Fannie Z. Lando Scholarship, Michael and Jane Zunich Memorial Scholarship, J.V. Nelson Citizenship Award, Ohio State Fair Outstanding Cake Decorator 2014-2016, Ohio State Fair Grand Champion Cake Decorator 2015, softball team co-captain, volleyball team co-captain, All OVAC Academic Award, softball Eastern District 2nd team 2014-2016, volleyball 1st team All-OVAC 2017, volleyball District 12 1st team 2017 and volleyball All Buckeye 8 South 2017.

Cusick’s activities include: softball, volleyball, pep crew, senior sister, boys basketball statistician, yearbook editor, student council, student office aide, National Honor Society, Bellaire Middle School After Hours Academy volunteer tutor, 4-H Camp counselor, president/secretary/ treasurer of 4-H Key Ridge Crafts and Critters Club, department and committee chair for Belmont County Junior Fair Board, medical research internship with West Liberty University and West Virginia University, and self-employed baking business entrepreneur.

Cusick is a member of Coalbrook Presbyterian Church in Neffs and a member of Rockhill Presbyterian Youth Group. She plans to attend West Liberty University this fall to study biology/pre-optometry as a full Elbin Scholar.

∫ Porter is the daughter of Kelly and Anna Porter. Her GPA is 4.100.

Porter has received the following honors and awards: Principal’s list/honor roll (four years), honors diploma, Buckeye Girls State 2016 delegate, Wheeling Youth Leadership Conference delegate, Student Council chaplain, National Honor Society activity coordinator, XTO Challenge Program – Academic Excellence and Community Service awards, Donald E. Carpenter Farm Bureau Scholarship and Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship.

Porter’s activities include: volleyball, pep crew, senior sister, boys basketball statistician, yearbook staff, student council, National Honor Society, After School Achievement Program volunteer, Belmont County 4-H, and Belmont County Drug Free Club.

Porter is a member of St. John Roman Catholic Church in Bellaire. She plans to attend Ohio State University this fall and major in biology.

∫ Taylor Stoner, daughter of Rodney and April Stoner, is the salutatorian for the Class of 2017 with a GPA of 4.058.

Stoner has received the following honors and awards: Principal’s list/honor roll (four years), honors diploma, student of the month, student council treasurer, Jack Bonar Memorial Girls Basketball Scholarship, Bellaire High School Endowment Fund Scholarship, Tod Goodwin Scholarship, Dr. James and Stephany Austin Alumni Scholarship, The Challenge Program Award XTO Energy, four-year letter in cross country, basketball, and track; All-Times Leader Team in cross country and track, individual and regional qualifier in cross country and track, member of the OVAC Championship Team in cross country, OVAC All-Conference Academic in cross country and track, Eastern District Academic and All-Star Team in cross country, Buckeye 8 Champions 2016-2017 in basketball, and District 12 All-Star Girls Classic 2017 in basketball.

Stoner’s activities include: cross country, basketball, track, senior sister, prom committee, pep crew, student council, teacher’s aide, National Honor Society, Drug Free Club of America, volunteer at vacation Bible school, volunteer for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Basket Bingo, and employed at Bellaire Dairy Queen.

Stoner is a member of First Christian Church in Martins Ferry. She plans to attend West Virginia University School of Nursing this fall and graduate with a bachelor of science in nursing.
