River Valley Health Foundation Awards Scholarship

WHEELING — The River Valley Health Foundation Inc., formerly the OVHS&E Foundation, is pleased to announce the inaugural Heather Miller Memorial Scholarship recipient is Sydney Elizabeth Derrow.

Derrow is graduating this spring from Wheeling Park High School. She is the daughter of Christopher Derrow of Wheeling. She will be attending West Liberty University in the fall and studying nursing.

Derrow was among several scholarship applicants who were asked to submit an essay explaining why they had chosen to pursue a career in nursing. Derrow shared that she has always dreamed of pursuing nursing because she loves improving peoples’ everyday lives. She completed the Certified Nursing Assistant program while at Wheeling Park High School and has volunteered for various health centers in the Wheeling area. She especially enjoyed her time at Good Shepherd Nursing Home working with the elderly residents where she is currently employed as a certified nursing assistant. She is a member of Health Occupation Students of America and serves as a co-chairwoman for the club. She also enjoys soccer and has volunteered for the Clearview Volunteer Fire Department.

Derrow has set her sights on completing nursing school and continuing on as a nurse practitioner. She has a passion for helping those individuals who are battling addictions.

“It is a great pleasure to award this scholarship to this young lady. We wish her the best in the future and look forward to her being a part of the health care team in our community,” said Orphy Klempa, chairman, River Valley Health Foundation Board of Trustees.

The Heather Miller Memorial Scholarship has been made possible through funds raised during the Heather Miller Memorial Golf Scramble. The family of Miller, who died just months before she was set to graduate from the nursing program at West Virginia University, established this annual scholarship in their daughter’s name. The scholarship is to be awarded to a graduating senior from Wheeling Park High School who intends to study nursing.
