Another division for St.C. derby
ST. CLAIRSVILLE – With snow still lining the ground and temperatures hovering near the freezing mark it’s hard to think soap box derby racing.
But that’s just what Matt Myers has on his mind.
The race director and organizer for St. Clairsville’s All-American Soap Box Derby is well under way with preparations for the June 4 running of the second annual race.
Myers said the race committee is accepting donations to help fund the race and looking for sponsors.
The committee is also looking for a few extra drivers, especially those who may have out-aged or outgrown their stock derby cars.
”We trying to run a Super Stock race this year along with the Stock race,” Myers said. ”What it allows is kids up to age 17 to still be able to race and it also allows for a bigger kid to ride in the car.
”If they’ve won or outgrown the stock car, there is another race now they can run.”
In the past when both the Martins Ferry race was affiliated with the All-American along with last year’s St. Clairsville race, once a racer reached the age of 14, they couldn’t race locally.
The stock division is for kids ages 8-13. Plus, the combined weight of car and driver in the stock division is a maximum of 200 pounds.
The super stock division is for kids ages 10-17 and the combined weight can reach up to 230 pounds.
Also, once a driver has won a local race in any division, they can no longer compete in that division in any sanctioned All-American local race.
Now, if a local kid is lucky enough to win the stock race on their first try, their local All-American racing career will not be over.
”We are also taking new car orders and with the new car orders there will be a free registration,” Myers said.
Myers explained that eligible drivers can race in either the stock or super stock division in St. Clairsville, but they cannot race both.
The race committee is still ironing out the details as far as dates for inspections and the trial runs.
