Young leukemia patient gains community support

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Folks in the Ohio Valley are highly generous when one of their own is in need.

St. Clairsville High School sophomore Allie Hamilton has recently been diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia, which is more commonly known as APML.

To help combat the disease, Hamilton, 15, is receiving chemotherapy and numerous blood transfusions at Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh.

The Central Blood Bank, which is a non-profit group that serves Eastern Ohio, Northern West Virginia and Western Pennsylvania, is holding a blood drive at St. Clairsville High School on Tuesday from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. in the gymnasium to aid Hamilton.

“We were contacted by the blood bank and asked to do a replenishment blood drive,” said St. C. Superintendent/Principal Walt Skaggs. “We did not hesitate. Our staff and students are working very hard to recruit donors. Our thoughts and prayers are with Allie and her family.”

To schedule an appointment to make a blood donation, you’re to visit and search with sponsor code ZRTN0954.

A benefit was held for Hamilton, who is a member of the St. Clairsville Marching Band and has also been a member of Destination Imagination since fourth grade, Saturday by the band and volleyball team.

The volleyball team hosted a preview scrimmage against Fort Frye and all of the proceeds went to Hamilton’s battle. The band took part and there were vendors set up in the lobby.

The event was organized by Lady Red Devils head coach Christa Truchan.

“A special thanks goes out to Jenkins Sporting Goods, St. C. Little Singers, the community, parents, athletes, coaching staff and volunteers who made (Saturday) possible,” Truchan said. “It really reflects how the community and school district can pull together to help.”

According to Truchan, more than $1,500 was raised to benefit Hamilton and a sale of t-shirts, which read “no one fights alone,” is still ongoing for $10. Anyone interested in purchasing one should contact Truchan at 740-338-0840 or via email at
