Shadyside house fire probed
SHADYSIDE – Firefighters from Shadyside, Martins Ferry, Neffs and Powhatan Point responded to a house fire on Highland Avenue in Shadyside on Tuesday.
No one was home on the side of the duplex where the fire started in the basement around 5 p.m. According to Shadyside Fire Chief Dave Lenz, the blaze began near the furnace, but the exact cause is unknown.
Tom Wells, occupant of one side of the duplex, was alerted by a woman he did not know who told him that smoke was coming from the house. He said he came out and saw the smoke coming out of the attic. He called 911. He said he had just moved into the duplex about a month ago.
Lenz said the fire spread to the first and second floors and the attic through the inside of the walls. A ladder truck was used to give firefighters access to the roof where they cut holes with a chain saw for smoke ventilation.
Jann and John Poe own the duplex. They said they were glad the occupant got out safely.
