St. Clairsville opposes state tax bill
ST. CLAIRSVILLE City council passed a resolution Monday night in opposition to the state’s Municipal Income Tax House Bill 601. The motion will be sent to State Rep. Andrew Thompson and State Sen. Lou Gentile.
Mayor Robert Vincenzo noted that the Ohio Municipal League and others have adopted similar resolutions and are sending word to their representatives. He estimates more than 600 municipalities in Ohio are sending word.
“The resolutions have been pouring out into both the house and the senate and we are hoping it has a great impact and that they will sit down and at least talk and start modifications on some of the issues,” he said.
Finance Director Cindi Henri also reported revenue losses for the city. She noted an average loss of $82,375 in the last few years. At the end of this year, the city can expect a loss of local government money of about $9,500. Also the estate tax average during five years is calculated at $354,000, which goes away at the end of this year. Another loss is tangible personal property, which averages out to $10,000 yearly.
She reported ongoing progress with the Regional Income Tax Agency to determine the loss ratio for income tax purposes.
Vincenzo also relayed a report from Columbia Gas informing the city that they would begin automated meter reading Nov. 28. Meter reading for the 45 thousand meters in the Ohio Valley will be done by means of a passing truck. No employees will enter a resident’s property unless there is a problem with a meter. In other matters, Council Member Frank Sabatino thanked citizens for passing the fire district’s levy. Also, a fire board meeting will take place Nov. 28, 4:30 p.m.
Chief Martin Kendzora reported a successful Christmas parade.
Planning and Zoning Administrator Tom Murphy reported a planning committee meeting scheduled for Dec. 3, 6 p.m. and another for Jan. 7.
Also, the city is still picking up leaves. Residents are asked to bag their leaves and place them on the curb.
