School board stresses safety

THE BARNESVILLE Board of Education convened for its December meeting Thursday to address the state of the district, as 2012 winds down.

One member of the district received regional recognition from the OSBA, as Melissa Swallie was recognized for the Southeast Region and deemed an “Excellent Classified Employee” within the district for her efforts.

Changes to safety policies have come to light following the aftermath of the Connecticut school shooting tragedy.

Barnesville school officials have now discussed the admittance of persons to all of the district’s building and the locking of all areas where one could gain unauthorized entrance. These plans were presented and will go into effect immediately, if not already done so.

Superintendent Randy Lucas highlighted many of the policy changes that will be forthcoming in the short term at the state level. As the reforms and restructuring of the academic systems take place, the schools will be in a foot race to keep up with compliance.

While Barnesville schools currently stand in compliance, discussions about getting a head start on the new changes were brought forward, but will be at a stand still until the state clarifies these proposed regulations specifically.

Several athletic positions were addressed as the board gave nod to volunteer coaches.

Denny Huntsman was approved for basketball. John Blattler and Jonathan Rockwell will be helping with the swimming program.

Dawn George, Malorie Jubat, Heidi Fisher and Marcia Carpenter were approved for student aide and substitute duties. Julie Feldner was extended as a long – term substitute in the classroom.

The Board also approved positions substitute bus drivers and maintenance work in Adam Winland, Robert Hutchinson, Michael Merritt, Bill Kindberg, and George Hoover.

The District has scheduled its yearly Organizational and Tax budget meeting which is to be held Jan. 14, 2013 at 6:45 p.m. in the Middle School cafeteria. Richard Pryor was voted by the board to lead these meetings.
