Green arraigned in vehicular homicide case
ST. CLAIRSVILLE – Robert William Green, 57, 52235 National Road, St. Clairsville, was arraigned Thursday before Judge Jennifer R. Sargus.
He pleaded not guilty to one count of aggravated vehicular manslaughter, a felony of the second degree, and one count of failing to stop after an accident, a felony of the third degree, occurring Aug. 8, 2012. He is also charged with a count of hit-skip.
His status conference was set for Feb. 1, with plea agreement March 15 and trial April 2. Bond was continued at $25,000.
Jason Cattane, 31, Bridgeport, was killed in the August accident, which occurred near the North Ebbert Road intersection. He was reportedly walking home after attending the funeral of a friend’s mother.
The boy’s father, David R. Cattane, was present at the arraignment. He said he wishes justice to be served and hopes for the maximum sentence.
“The state highway patrol did an outstanding job investigating this case, and all the evidence they gathered from their investigation was presented to the grand jury last week,” said Prosecutor Chris Berhalter. “After hearing all that evidence, they did return a two-count indictment.”
He added that the delay between the accident and charging someone was unfortunate but inevitable.
“When you are dealing with a case that involved the loss of life, it is something that is obviously very serious, and something you want to move on as quick as possible – not only to hold the person accountable for what happened in that case, but to make sure they don’t harm anyone else. However, unfortunately, you have to be thorough when you conduct these investigations, and every time you involve crime labs it again unfortunately takes time,” said Berhalter.
