Piedmont man charged in ax-tossing incident
A PIEDMONT-area man is being held in the Belmont County Jail after he allegedly threw an ax at a woman at 71359 Hendrysburg Freeport Road.
The incident reportedly happened sometime early Tuesday.
Dan J. Gay, 47, of 71359 Hendrysburg Freeport Road, is being held on charges of assault and domestic violence. A bond of $15,000 was set on the assault charge.
According to a deputy with the Belmont County Sheriff’s Office, Gay allegedly struck his girlfriend with the ax in her head at their home. The deputy said the victim got into a car and tried to escape, but Gay allegedly would not let her go.
Then, around 1 a.m., 911 received a call from the mother of the victim who said she was on the phone with her daughter and the suspect was attacking the car. The victim then ran to a friend’s house and Gay left the scene.
Authorities followed up and continued their search for Gay. They found him at his mother’s house. The deputy said Gay cooperated during the arrest.
According to the deputy, the attack was likely the result of an argument. He said officers learned there was a dispute after some friends left. It was then that Gay threw the ax.
The deputy said the victim was still in the hospital as of Tuesday afternoon. Detectives from the sheriff’s office are conducting the investigation of the incident.
