Switzerland of Ohio to penalize students for large lunch bills
WOODSFIELD – The Switzerland of Ohio Local School District will begin to penalize students with deliquent lunch accounts by not allowing the student to participate in extracurricular activities, which includes sports and marching band.
“This was discussed at last week’s board meeting between the board and administration,” said Superintendent Larry Elliott. “We have notified all parents, and we have had a lot of people pay their bills. The response has been really positive.”
The accounts in question involve debts of more then $50 to the school district. The decision to do this came this week and parents have been notified, which most have paid already without problem, according to the superintendent.
“We are not denying anyone a meal, we feed everyone,” said Elliott. “But we are not a wealthy district and cannot carry the debt. We have been dealing with this for three years.”
The district consists of three high schools, six elementary schools and a vocational school.
