Fatal crash probed

THE Ohio Highway Patrol in St. Clairsville is awaiting a ruling from the county coroner’s office before releasing any additional information on the traffic incident which claimed the life of a 62-year-old Rayland man on Belmont 64 on Saturday at 6:30 a.m.

According to initial reports, Alvin S. Dowell was driving a coal truck westbound toward Ohio 9. He came out of a curve and the truck rolled over.

Troopers responded but Dowell was unresponsive and they started CPR. The Cumberland Trail Emergency Squad arrived and continued CPR. They thought they lost him but he was taken to the hospital. According to a trooper, Dowell “may have been revived for a short time, but unfortunately he passed away.”

Crews cleaned up the road which was covered with coal. One lane was closed and troopers re-directed traffic for approximately five hours until the road was cleared.

Trooper Jeff Herink said Monday that an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death. He said he expects it will take a couple of days to get the results.
