Adena SAL honors students
ADENA – The Adena Sons of the American Legion Post 525 held a brief ceremony Tuesday, presenting $500 scholarship checks to four deserving area students.
This is the eighth year the SAL has assisted area students.
Receiving the scholarships were: Rachel Lynn Kelley, Austin Michael Marshall, Dominic Ivan Simeral and Taryn Marie Tonkovich.
The four students, along with members of their families and SAL and American Legion Post 525 members, were present for Tuesday’s ceremony.
All four recipients spoke briefly on how thankful they were to receive the scholarship, along with giving brief descriptions of themselves and thanking the SAL and legion.
A meal followed the presentation.
SAL Chaplain Frank Nameth, who has also served as a substitute teacher in the Buckeye Local School District, remarked about seeing the positive transformation in the four students as they progressed through their scholastic years.
The scholarships are awarded annually to eligible students in either the Buckeye Local or Harrison Central school districts.
Academics, attendance record, extra curricular activities and community service are all factored into the selection process.
Each recipient must have a veteran or active member of the military in their family as well in order to be eligible.
The scholarships are funded by the annual Sons of the Legion golf scramble. That scramble is slated for July 27 at Castle Shannon Golf Course in Hopedale.
Nameth noted that people love to golf, and when you factor that in with the fact that participants are playing for a good cause, it’s easy to get people to sign up.
The SAL needs $2,000 each year generated from the scramble to fund the scholarships. Anything over that amount gets donated to other organizations and groups throughout the area.
