Demolition work expected to resume today in Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT – Demolition on a row of burned-out buildings on Main Street in the village came to a halt Wednesday when an issue arose.

According to the owner of the buildings, Michael Shaheen, he hired a reputable company to raze the buildings, which were destroyed by a St. Patrick’s Day fire that tragically claimed the lives of three young children and severely injured their parents.

However, Bridgeport village officials had the work stopped Wednesday due to safety issues.

“I hired a company that is certified in most major cities in Ohio,” Shaheen said. “The mayor was displeased with the way the company was loading the materials. We came to an agreement and work should continue.”

Shaheen said the work should be completed in 3-4 days.

Attempts to reach Bridgeport Mayor John Callarik this morning were unsuccessful before The Times Leader went to press.
