Wine industry booms in Ohio

JUNE IS Ohio Wine Month. The observance came into existence as a way to celebrate Ohio’s wines and the impact they have on the state’s economy.

Ohio currently has about 162 wineries which yield more then one million gallons of wine every year. The wine industry in Ohio has grown significantly over the last 10 years, but the history goes back farther then that.

Ohio’s winemaking history began in 1850s, according to www.tasteohiowines.com.

The Buckeye State’s soil and drainage are well-suited for growing many different types of grapes. Soil temperatures that are fertile with limestone cause the grapes to have a more intense flavor.

Ohio is also home to five different viticultural appellations, which is the geographic origins of the grapes used to produce the wine.

The five areas are Lake Erie Appellation, Isle St. George, Grand River Valley, Ohio River Valley Appellation and Loramie Creek Appellation.

Many of Ohio wineries offer day trips and tours that will educate wine enthusiasts on the art of wine making.

Ohio has multiple wineries available for visitation. Many of these wineries have won awards as well.

Newer vineyards are popping up every day.

  • Recently, Vineyard 22 in Cadiz opened its doors and wine corks in April. Like many local vineyards, Vineyard 22, which is right off U.S. 22, grows, crushes and bottles its own wine and currently offer five different varieties and are working on two more. According to Marilyn Monozula, the owner of Vineyard 22, one of the hardest parts about growing their Concord grapes this year was the late frost in May that Ohio experienced this year.
