Stabbing suspect turns self in
STEUBENVILLE – A 16-year-old male turned himself into City Police this morning in connection with the fatal stabbing Thursday evening of Demitrius Thomas, 17, in an alley in the rear of the 300 block of Lawson Avenue, police reported.
Officers were called around 10:44 p.m. Thursday about an altercation and found Thomas unresponsive, police reported. Officers called for Ambulance Service Inc. and attempted to administer first aid. Paramedics arrived and pronounced Thomas dead at the scene.
Officers said Thomas was stabbed multiple times about the head area and chest.
Police reported a witness reported hearing an altercation and the victim yelling. The witness couldn’t see what happened but immediately called police, with officers arriving two minutes after the call. The witness told police where the suspect ran.
Another person told police they saw a male running near Murphy Field, located on Union Avenue, without a shirt. Officers searched the area and found bloody clothes and shoes in a bag in a garbage can in the 400 block of Union Avenue.
The juvenile suspect walked into the police station around 6:30 a.m. today.
City Police Chief William McCafferty said the suspect is cooperating with detectives.
This is the fifth murder in the city so far this year.
