Barnesville to welcome Cash Explosion
THE CASH Explosion will be at the Barnesville Pumpkin Festival Friday, Sept. 27, according to Eugene “Doc” Householder, director of the Belmont County Tourism Council.
It’s a first for the Barnesville festival, which is marking 50 years of existence in September.
“I think it’s great,” said Householder when telling about plans for the Ohio Lottery’s game show to be in Barnesville. “It will be a sell-out, no doubt – the tickets are expected to go out in one day.”
Two shows will be done during the Cash Explosion’s visit, one in the afternoon and the other in the evening. The shows will be in the high school auditorium, and 1,200 people will be able to attend each show, Householder said.
Those who want tickets to one of the shows have to go online to the Ohio Lottery website, according to Householder. He added it’s not possible to obtain tickets yet, but they probably will be available soon.
“They (Cash Explosion representatives) contacted the school first, then me second,” explained the tourism director. “It all hinged on getting rooms. Fortunately, we were able to get the rooms. … We arranged for 65 rooms, 45 for workers and 20 for the contestants.”
Plans are for 45 of those involved with the shows to be lodged at Microtel Inn & Suites and other 20 will be at Hampton Inn, which is adjacent to the new Microtel facility.
Householder said he thought Barnesville was selected for the Cash Explosion shows, because this year’s festival has reached the half century mark.
Although it’ll be a first for Barnesville, the tourism director said the Cash Explosion had been in Belmont County a few years ago. That was in 1998 when the show was in the health and education center on the Ohio University Eastern campus.
Householder, a Barnesville resident, has a long association with the Pumpkin Festival. He pointed out that he was at the every first meeting held for the pumpkin extravaganza.
In addition, he headed the Barnesville festival for 38 years, indicating that’s more than a third of a lifetime providing a person lives 100 years.
