Bridgeport to host teachers symposium

BRIDGEPORT – For the second year in a row, the Bridgeport Exempted Village School District will host the Belmont County in-service teachers symposium.

The event is planned for Monday in the schools’ cafetorium.

There is one change this year, however. Instead of spending just a half-a-day, some 700 teachers will be there all day learning various ways to educate the youth of the county.

“We’re very excited to have this in-service program here again,” Bridgeport Superintendent Ted Downing said. “Last year went very well as a half-a-day, but this year we decided to expand it to a full day.”

Headlining the program will be featured speaker Hall Davidson, who joined the Discovery Education in 2005 where he blogs, creates webinars, and works in educational partnerships and Global Learning Initiatives as a director of the Discovery Educator Network. He has spoken about technology and education to audiences around the world.

“In understand he is a very good speaker,” Downing noted. “I’m looking forward to listening to him.”

Downing said teachers are to report plenty of time ahead of the 8 a.m. start.

Davidson began teaching in 1971. He has taught middle and high school english, mathematics, spanish, and bilingual mathematics, as well as college courses on technology for teacher credential candidates. He left the classroom to teach math on television, winning an Emmy Award and spending 20 years at Los Angeles-area PBS stations teaching, leading staff development, and championing content creation by students and teachers.

Davidson is a frequent contributor to national education publications, has co-authored TechWorks, an internationally distributed classroom technology kit; and co-founded, a resource free online kits to encourage project-based learning with media.

He was elected to the board of Computer-Using Educators where he served for six years.

ALSO, Tuesday night is the annual “Bulldog Pride Night” from 5-8 p.m. at the school. The balloon launch is set for 7:30, with the pep rally at Bill Jobko Stadium from 8-8:15.

Downing said all current students in the district, their parents, alumni and anyone else who wants to attend are invited.

Tours of the school will be given and different organizations will have booths setup.
