Ferry FD ready for annual steak fry

MARTINS FERRY – The Martins Ferry Fire Department’s second annual steak fry is right around the corner.

The steak fry runs from 6-11 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 31 at the department’s Ladder Company on the corner of S. 4th and Locust Sts.

Last year, the department’s first foray into a steak fry yielded positive results, with between 200-300 in attendance.

Fire Chief Jack Regis is hoping for a similar turnout this year.

“It’s basically a block party,” Regis said. “We’ll shut down (4th) street, from DeFelice (Brothers Pizza) down to The Times Leader.”

Tickets are available for $35 per couple and $20 for individuals and can be purchased from members of the fire department. Tickets are also available at the door.

A disc jockey will be spinning the hits throughout the evening. A 50-50 raffle will be held, along with drawings for various other prizes.

The cost of the ticket includes: steak, a baked potato, salad, dessert and drinks, including beer. Participants can bring their own liquor if they choose.

This event helps supplement the department’s fundraising efforts, which also includes the annual Betty Zane Days festival.

Money generated helps fund the volunteer department.

Now, a portion is also going to go to assisting in funding a revamp of its memorial monument located in city park.

First up, Regis noted the department wants to give the current monument a facelift, along with repaving the concrete walkway surrounding the monument as well as the decking.

They want to give the sidewalk a low incline in order to increase its handicapped accessibility.

Plans are include improving lighting and landscaping surrounding the monument.

One big expense is that the department is looking to purchase a bronzed helmet as well as a granite pedestal to hold the helmet. Combined, the two items will cost between $14,000-15,000.

Regis noted Martins Ferry High School’s drafting class assisted in devising a design for the concrete and decking. The department is working from that design.

He’s hoping the revamp and addition of the helmet can be installed and completed by the time the department’s memorial service rolls around in 2014.

The department is developing plans to assist in paying for the upgrades.

Regis stated that memorial bricks may be sold to assist in paying for the project. People will be able to purchase a brink in honor of a past member of the department. They can also do so in honor of veterans or simply just as a donation.
