OR&W adding second fire shift

SHADYSIDE – The OR&W Fire District made a motion at their Wednesday, Aug. 7, meeting that will allow for the station to have a second shift during special events.

The second shift will be from 4 p.m. to midnight. This will help with such events like home football games and community events. According to Fire Chief David Lenz, there have been home games were the ambulance has had to leave on a call and the school likes having an ambulance there.

With the second shift in place, the volunteers that cover home games and other community events will not have to leave. There are five home games this season.

“It was mostly just the home football games we were concerned about, but then we got to talking about the community days,” Lenz said.

While the Fireman’s Festival was very successful this year, there was a concern of citizens bringing large dogs to the festival and kids riding bikes through the event. There were no injuries or incidents.

The five raffle ticket winners for the 2013 Shadyside Fireman’s Association Festival include:

– First prize, La-Z-Boy Chair – Dorothy Apicella;

– Second prize, GPS navigation unit – Bob Munjas;

– Third prize, $200 cash – Mark Mitchell;

– Fourth prize, $150 cash – Ed Ciszewski, Jr.;

– Fifth prize, $50 cash – Wilda Warren.

Anyone who has not received his or her prize can pick it up at the OR&W Fire Station.

The next fire district meeting will be held on Sept. 4 at 6 p.m. at the OR&W Fire Station.
