Wheeling shooter dies

WHEELING — A man who reportedly fired more than 20 shots into the Wheeling Federal Building this afternoon has died, authorities said.

The man has not yet been identified, though U.S. Attorney William Ihlenfeld tolds WV MetroNew that the shooter was a former Wheeling police officer. A security guard at the Federal Building also received minor injuries during the shooting rampage, U.S. Marshal Chief deputy Mike Claxton said.

The shooting occurred about 2:30 p.m. today. Police have not yet released a motive.

The Federal Building may not have been the man’s only target, as an eyewitness to the shooting said he also may have been targeting the nearby Wheeling YWCA.
