Yorkville neighborhood watch program taking shape
YORKVILLE – Village council met Tuesday to discuss a neighborhood watch program.
A meeting to discuss details of this program, and how citizens can get involved with it, will be held Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. at the municipal building. The neighborhood watch program will allow citizens to meet and collaborate to discuss topics of concern. It will also teach citizens how to be extra “eyes and ears” for the community and law enforcement.
Mayor Blair Closser stated, “I think a lot of [people] are still apprehensive and unsure about it,” referring to the watch. Village council members and officials will be present at the meeting to answer questions.
Though the council discussed the Yorkville steel mill, no progress has been made toward ensuring it stays open. Council members have been in talks with State?Rep. Jack Cera and State Sen. Lou Gentile to try to garner support for the steel mill, and council member Dana Brown suggested that U.S.?Sen. Sherrod Brown be contacted by the council. No decision has been made by the owner to whether the mill will remain open.
Council members also discussed repairs that are needed for the village garage. It is in need of new face boards, gutters, and downspouts, along with repairs to the roof. Water from rain needs to be directed away from the building; it is currently causing boards to rot. Materials for the repairs are estimated at $4,500.
An ordinance that states public records will be available for five business days was approved. Copies of public records will cost 25 cents a page.
Vacant structures were a topic of discussion; owners of buildings who have neglected to buy building permits will be sent letters telling them to register and pay the fee within two weeks. The owners have already been given 90 days notice.
The fire department will host a pulled chicken dinner on Sunday, Oct. 20 from noon to 6 p.m. Meals will cost $6, available eat-in or take-out.
Lastly, trick-or-treat will be Oct. 31, from 6-7 p.m.
