Newhart, DiFabrizio win mayor races

Residents in three local communities must like the direction their towns are headed as three incumbent mayors were handed the seal of approval, courtesy of successful re-election bids during Tuesday’s election.
Shadyside Mayor Bob Newhart, Bellaire Mayor Vince DiFabrizio and Tiltonsville’s Kristine Prati will all receive another term as mayor.
In Shadyside, Newhart had to fend off a strong challenge by former mayor Edward Lynn Marling.
Newhart received 543 votes to Marling’s 496 with second challenger Ronald P. Kaluger Jr. receiving 161 votes.
Marling is a former mayor of Shadyside, and this was his second bid to unseat Newhart from the mayor’s seat.
Newhart watched the results from the Board of Elections office in St. Clairsville, along with Alyssa Newhart, and after the final results were read, he was met with a round of congratulatory remarks from those gathered in attendance.
He thanked the voters of Shadyside, but the mayor seemed just as pleased, if not more so, to see the school levy pass, along with two levies that will continue to aid the operation of the village.
One was a 4-mill, 5-year renewal levy for operating expenses for the village. That passed 713-482. The other was a 2.5-mill, 5-year renewal that helps to fund the village’s police department. That ballot measure passed 609-581.
Like his counterpart to the south, Bellaire’s DiFabrizio sought and won re-election against two candidates.
DiFabrizio garnered 48 percent of the vote, finishing with 432. Former Councilman Rickie Parker was second with 264 votes and village businessman Dan Brown had total 210 votes. Combined, Parker and Brown had 474 votes
DiFabrizio had noted during his bid for re-election that Bellaire seems to be in the beginning stages of getting turned around and he, council and village leaders have worked hard to get to that stage. He was hoping to be able to stick around to see the fruits of their labor.
