Infrastructure tops St. C. BOE meeting
ST. CLAIRSVILLE – The St. Clairsville-Richland City School District Board of Education faced a light agenda Wednesday when it convened for its final regularly-scheduled meeting of 2013.
Superintendent Walt Skaggs updated the board on a myriad of infrastructure activities, including the reception of a grant for the purchase of new emergency radios. He said the radios will be placed in each building and will allow personnel to access 911 and emergency personnel with the push of a button.
In addition, Skaggs reported the public address system at the elementary building will be brought up to 21st century standards and six new circuits will be added at the building to enhance lighting and security.
Students in the district will begin their holiday break Dec. 21. When they return, some will find some new doors, which Bedway Development is planning to install during the break.
Skaggs also reported a wireless access point was installed at Red Devil Stadium. The final step will be connecting the bus garage to the main campus.
Earlier this fall, the district joined forces with Lowe’s and Wheeling Hospital to put together “To-Go Buckets” designed to aid personnel in the event of a emergency situation at one of the district’s buildings.
Skaggs said, contrary to some reports, the buckets were distributed the day they were received. In addition, all staff and students were trained in ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate).
“Our staff and students did an outstanding job,” Skaggs told Board members.
Per Skaggs’ recommendation, the board approved the purchase of a 2014 Dodge Ram 2500 ST from Thomas Garage for $30,033.50 to be paid from general funds.
Skaggs said the vehicle will be used to plow and for other general needs. He said the district has two other trucks – a 1984 and 1997 model – with the 1997 model in the worst shape.
The board also approved the purchase of a special needs 10-passenger van to be paid from Belmont County Board of Developmental Disabilities funding. Cost is estimated at $40,000.
Under personnel, the board approved the retirement of teacher Alexandria Yavelak, effective at the end of the school year. Also, the following certified and classified substitutes were approved for the current school year – Jonathan Padgett, Amy Shreves (teachers) and Allen Indermuhle (bus driver).
Jonathan Duncan, Chad Baugh, Bob Sabo, Mike Rine, James Mahute, Randy Bernard, Rodney Earliwine, Perry Jones and Ryan Jarvie were approved as athletic workers for the current school year.
The following teachers will be paid from IDEA Part-B to serve on the District Review Team to meet requirements of the Corrective Action Plan for the current school year – Lorrie Klos, Karen Mamone, Kristen Crawford, Jenny Schmidt, Arrin Midei, Dawn Daubenmeyer, Kristen Myser, Christa Truchan, Carrie Melko and Amber Shepherd-Smith.
Ben Frye was approved as the Close Up Advisor at a cost of $1,035, while Sheila Zuzak was approved to complete speech assessments at St. Mary’s Grade School.
The following donations were made during the previous meeting – Red Devil Club (athletic department), $15,000; The Saints Club (athletic department), $10,000; Citizens Bank (athletic department), $250; Mr. & Mrs. Mike Perkins (boys’ soccer team, $32; The Saints Club (volleyball), $3,218; Mr. & Mrs. Scott Stephens (volleyball), $12; Home & School (elementary transportation), $473.64; Lifetouch (elementary principals fund), $2,093,56; Middle School Principals Fund (Red Devil Dispatch), $100; Mr. James Biernot (middle school MH class), $200; James Jeffries ($500), anonymous ($57) and Mr. & Mrs. John Hardesty ($300), all to the Barb Jeffries Scholarship.
During the public portion of the meeting, student Cameron Gray presented a letter to the board expressing her concern about the distance she and some of her fellow students have to walk to school each day. And with winter weather setting in, they are concerned. Board members thanked her for the information and said they would take it under advisement.
