Shadyside school board welcomes new members
SHADYSIDE – The Shadyside Board of Education met Wednesday evening to hold a reorganizational meeting.
New members Doug Campbell and Chuck Klug were sworn in, and the board elected Dominic DeFelice as president with Donna Joseph as vice president. The board decided to continue regularly meeting on the third Wednesday of every month at 6 p.m.
Bre Lappert, a senior at Shadyside High School, attended the meeting to recap her experience at the Liberty Bowl Classic in Memphis, Tenn. The college football game was held Dec. 31 and broadcast on ESPN. Lappert was one of 100 high school homecoming queens chosen to attend the event; 40,000 applied. Criteria for being chosen included extracurricular activities, grade point average, volunteer work and a written essay. Lappert remarked that Ohio and Texas had more representatives than any other states.
Over a four-day trip, Lappert met other homecoming queens from around the nation, toured St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, participated in the Beale Street parade, and took part in pre-game and half-time activities at the football game.
The homecoming queens were escorted onto the field by Air National Guardsmen for pre-game, and during half-time they performed a choreographed dance. Country music group Diamond Rio also performed during half-time.
Lappert stated that her favorite part of the experience was the visit to St. Jude.
“They were all happy to see us,” she said of the children, and added that many wanted to try on the homecoming queens’ tiaras.
Student council helped to sponsor Lappert’s trip, and the board presented her with a certificate as a token of appreciation for representing Shadyside at the game.
The current nine-week grading period ends this Friday. Superintendent John Haswell said that progress reports should go out as planned, though the district has been experiencing internet connection problems lately.
The next board of education meeting will be held Feb. 19 at 6 p.m.
