Job fair coming to Ohio Valley Mall

ST. CLAIRSVILLE – Belmont County Commissioners heard a presentation from Mike Schlanz on behalf of Ohio Means Jobs, formerly Belmont County Connections, located at 302 Walnut St., Martins Ferry regarding the name change and the upcoming job fair.

He said the state has mandated a name change across Ohio in the interest of consistent name recognition. The state has issued $6,000 for new signage.

The eighth annual job fair will be held March 26, noon to 4 p.m. at the Ohio Valley Mall. One hundred employers, agencies and training providers are registered. An additional oil company may register. Jobs include customer service, retail, oil and gas and mining and manufacturing. Other areas include construction and public services.

“A lot of people were hired from that event. It was really successful and we’re anticipating another successful event this year,” he said. “I think it would be a great opportunity for the public to stop by there and find employment.”

“I hope this year is just as successful as last year,” said Commissioner Matt Coffland. “There are jobs out there. You need to get to the job fair and apply. We are looking for new workers every day in this county.”

Schlanz added that last January saw 608 customer visits, with 721 this past January. February of 2013 saw 605 and 660 this past February. They are continuing to build relationships with employers. The summer youth program will also be launched soon.

The workforce development area also met or exceeded performance standards for serving adults, youth and dislocated workers.

There has also been an increase in requests for CDL truck driver training.

“Ohio Means Jobs is our county employment agency. They work every day to link people with jobs,” said Commissioner Ginny Favede, adding that the job fair was an extra effort that benefits the retail and other businesses.
