Rotary Club lends a hand

LANSING Members of the St. Clairsville Sunrise Rotary Club demonstrated service above self on Saturday, by donating their time and energy to residents of Stone House Place (also known as Lansing Manor). The Rotary Club spent several hours cleaning apartments for residents, most of whom are over age 65.

Residents filled out applications requesting what they would like cleaned in their apartments, and volunteer organization Faith in Action provided a plethora of cleaning supplies for the Rotary Club to get the job done.

Patty Hendershot, a Special Projects Coordinator for Faith in Action, told the club members they were the first adult group she had seen volunteer to help with cleaning, adding that it is usually done by college students on school breaks. Hendershot also encouraged the club members to hold conversations with residents as they worked.

Jeanette Wojcik , Executive Director for Faith in Action, explained that the two organizations came together through Bruce Wille, who is a member of both.

“We thought it was a good match,” she said, adding that she anticipated the two groups working together on more projects in the future. Wojcik also said Faith in Action is open to working with other groups for service projects.

Service Coordinator Kara Menges gave the Rotary Club a briefing on what was expected of them in their volunteering, and spoke about how the apartment complex operates and engages with its residents.

“We’ve got a great group of people here,” she said.

Stone House Place is owned by Lutheran Social Services (LSS), a charity organization based in Columbus. LSS owns many senior living residences and affordable housing communities. Menges said that LSS is looking to purchase more complexes in the area because of the pronounced need for low-income housing. LSS also operates homeless shelters and food pantries throughout 50 counties of Ohio.
