Belmont County’s oil-gas industry has first fatal

BELMONT – The natural gas industry suffered its first fatality in Belmont County Saturday afternoon when David Zamora, 43, died during an accident in the western part of the county.

According to Sheriff Dave Lucas, a Victoria, Texas, worker was crushed to death by a piece of moving equipment at the oil field site located off of Ohio 149 in Smith Township.

“It was a bad day,” Lucas said late Saturday night. “He was struck by a piece of heavy equipment as part of an operation of the oil and gas industry.”

The sheriff said the victim’s name would not be released until his family members were properly notified.

Officials at Rice Energy could not be reached for comment over the weekend.

According to reports, emergency personnel, along with deputies from the Belmont County Sheriff’s Office, were called to the scene at approximately 2:52 p.m. on McKelvey Road for a possible dead-on arrival. Belmont County Coroner Troy Balgo was summoned shortly thereafter.
