Monroe opening memory unit

WOODSFIELD – The grand opening of a memory unit – a first for Monroe County – is planned May 17 at the Monroe County Care Center, Moore Ridge Road, Woodsfield.

An open house at the new unit will be that day from 2-7 p.m., and a hog roast also is scheduled.

“We’re excited, and we’re hoping for good weather,” said Andrea Cullinan, care center director. As part of the hog roast, other food will be available, and the charge will be $5 a plate to those in the community.

Cullinan said the activities, which are open to the public, will coincide with National Nursing Home Week, planned from May 11-17.

The director added it was decided to open the memory unit because of the need in the community. The closest units of this type at other facilities are about an hour away, and those are full or full with a waiting list, she explained.

“We know this is a much-needed service, and we are honored to provide this to the community,” said Cullinan.

Included in the memory unit, which is part of the care center building, are one private room and 10 other rooms. There are 21 beds.

Cullinan said the private pay rate is $165 a day while the daily rate for a semi-private room is $155.

Admissions for the memory unit now are being accepted, and Patti Haralson is the admissions coordinator.

The director said the Area Agency on Aging is providing free dementia training for the Monroe center’s staff, and this is being taken by all direct care staff members.

Staff members are submitting proposed names for the unit, and the name deadline is by April 30.

Overall, the care center has 46 residents, and it has 60 beds.

The Progressive Health Care System, which is headquartered in Urbana, has a contract with the Monroe County Board of Commissioners to operate the center.

Cullinan said the company has been operating the center for more than a year. It also has facilities in Logan County, Ohio, and Covington, Ky.

“We look forward to continuing to serve residents of Monroe County and the surrounding area,” said the director.
