Belmont County gets $496K from Rice Energy

ST. CLAIRSVILLE – The Belmont County Commissioners accepted a check from Rice Energy during their Wednesday meeting.

The check presentation occurred after Rice cleared an acreage of 66.143 for the Port Authority. The property is located at the Industrial Park. They presented a check for $496,072.56.

“We really appreciate Rice and their involvement in the community. We’re very thankful for this money,” said Port Authority Director Larry Merry, adding that $250,000 has already been earmarked for partnering with the commissioners in installing a sewer system at the Industrial Park at Barnesville. $50,000 was borrowed from the commissioners. He noted Rice Energy’s involvement with the community.

“They are very committed to this area,” he said.

Commissioner Mark Thomas noted the challenges posed by the legal process.

“Anytime one of our main economic development engines is blessed with the good fortune of getting substantial money like this, in the end ultimately it means potentially more jobs for the county, more infrastructure for the county,” he said, adding compliments to the Port Authority for their efforts.

“Thank you for being a great partner with Belmont County,” said Commissioner Matt Coffland.
