Belmont County Senior Services finishes first half right on target
ST.?CLAIRSVILLE — The first half of 2014 has already concluded, and things are looking extremely positive for the recently founded Senior Services of Belmont County.
The Department was established as a stand-alone agency on November 1, 2013, and have been serving the needs of seniors throughout Belmont County ever since. In addition to success in programmatic services that include home delivered and congregate meals, medical transportation, senior centers, and homemaking and personal care services, SSOBC remains on target to finish out a sound fiscal year.
The total requested budget for 2014 was in the amount of $ 3,602,775.00.
In this budget, SSOBC provided for a capital outlay budget of $ 100,000.00. These funds have been used for the purchase of an additional “hot shot” truck for “meals on wheels” services and two replacement vehicles, with four-wheel drive capabilities for medical transportation services. The remaining balance of the capital outlay budget is slated for replacing dying kitchen equipment that produces approximately nine hundred meals daily.
Through the conclusion of the June month, and half way through the department’s operating year, the department has expended $1,701,387.50.
Continuing with the same expected expenses in the second half of the year, SSOBC will be on target to spend approximately $3.4 million in operating costs, $100,000 under budget.
David Hacker, SSOBC Program Coordinator noted, “The biggest increase we have seen this year is in relation to payments to our home health agencies who partner with us to provide quality homemaking and personal care services. This year we have seen $21,116.01 in increased billings for services provided to home bound seniors in our County.”
In addition to the remaining on course for a well-managed fiscal year, SSOBC has seen a cash balance increase. Comparing the current month of 2014 to the same point in the 2013 operating year, the SSOBC cash balance will have increased $629,222.61. Hacker noted, “It is because of a large team effort from all employees at SSOBC that we have been able to remain fiscally responsible with our funding streams. Staff have worked to decrease unnecessary expenses, assist in ensuring the maintenance of vehicles, and have diligently worked to move our operations to a paperless format. They do all this while continuing to provide high quality services to the seniors in Belmont County. I am proud of their work, and want to recognize their continued dedication to our mission. Our staff and management team understand that more than seventy five percent of our budget comes from the generosity of the residents of Belmont County, through approved local levies, and work hard to ensure that every dollar goes as far as possible in support our senior’s needs. We are grateful for the community’s support and proud that our county chooses to take care of our seniors.”
