Kroger donates to food bank

Kroger stores in and out of the area are donating to local food banks.

Recently, the Bellaire Kroger, located at 400 28th St., donated $4,552.64 to the Living Bread Kitchen, which is also located in Bellaire.

“This is customers’ money that allowed this to happen and we can’t thank them enough,” said Melissa Wade, Kroger employee.

“We have great and generous customers and none of this could have been made possible without them,” said Rick Parker, Kroger employee and Bellaire native. “The customers of Bellaire Kroger are quick to donate and help out. We really appreciate that, this could not have been done without them.”

The Living Bread Kitchen is located in the basement of The United Methodist Church on Guernsey Street. The group of volunteers that run this kitchen have been serving hot meals for over 20 years. Overall, they feed four to five hundred people a month.

“The people of Bellaire have always been very generous and this is an indication of how generous they are,” said Lillian Hepburn, the co-founder and now director of The Living Bread Kitchen. “Krogers has supported The Living Bread Kitchen ever since we started.”

Along with Hepburn and co-director Carol Beveridge are 33 faithful volunteers who help make this possible.

Bellaire Kroger is not alone in their donation, as every Kroger store in and out of the Ohio Valley is working to collect donations for a local food bank.

To help make these donations to local food banks possible they have re-launched their charitable initiative, “Fighting Hunger.” One of the ways that the Kroger stores have collected money was by doing Round Up donations. Every time a customer checks out, he or she has the choice to round up the end total and the additional change is donated.

With the help of this campaign and the donations made by customers, 11 Kroger stores in the Ohio Valley will be able to donate to various food banks.

Donations will be made to the following:

– Wheeling – Wheeling House of Carpenter

– Weirton – Community of Bread Basket

– Wellsburg – Salvation Army – Brooke

– Martins Ferry – Daily Bread

– Steubenville – Urban Mission

– Bellaire – Living Bread

– Weirton – Mountaineer Food Bank

– St. Clairsville – Daily Bread
