Bridgeport schools making more time for iPad homework

BRIDGEPORT – In an effort to provide each high school student with more time to complete homework in the iPad Initiative, the Bridgeport Exempted Village School District is offering additional supervised time.

Starting Tuesday, after-school sessions will be available from 2:45-4:30 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, according to Superintendent Ted Downing.

“When we started thinking about implementing this program, we felt like some of our students might need some extra time on the Internet,” Downing said. “We thought we needed to come up with some type of plan that would benefit the students.”

For those students wishing to take advantage of the opportunity, busing for any student who attends the session will be bused home, and all students will be permitted to bring a snack to eat during the sessions.

“Transportation will not be provided if a student leaves the session early,” Downing stressed. “They will be required to signout should this occur.”

High school principal Rob Zitzelsberger added, “these extra sessions will be supervised by certified teachers. I think it will be well received. Now the students can’t say that they weren’t given an opportunity to complete their homework.”

Downing said, “we’re just trying to make sure all of the students that don’t have the availability of the Internet at home, have the opportunity to get their work done. We’re trying to accommodate everyone.”

In addition, starting Oct. 8, the times will be extended one hour until 5:30, with busing also being provided at the end of the session.

Starting Saturday, Sept. 6, there will also be supervised time for students to complete assignments from 8-11 a.m. in the schools cafetorium. Students must arrive at the school by 7:50. However, busing will not be available on Saturdays. Students leaving before 11 a.m. will be required to signout.

“When school is not in sessions, after-school assignment time is canceled,” Downing added. “If school is canceled on a Friday, Saturday is also canceled.”

Also, there will be no after-school sessions on Oct. 2, Nov. 15, Jan. 28 and March 5 due to parent-teacher conferences.

Downing said the district is continuing to accept donations for iPads. A panel is also working on establishing guidelines to distribute the iPads to students who can’t afford them for various reasons.
