Weekend bank robbery suspect is apprehended in Columbus

THE MAN who allegedly robbed a WesBanco branch bank on Wheeling Island and one in St. Clairsville on Saturday was apprehended and is in a Columbus jail awaiting extradition to West Virginia.

According to authorities, William Joseph McBride Jr. , of Columbus, was arrested in Columbus about 4:45 p.m, on Saturday.

Wheeling Police said the robber walked into the Wheeling Island branch just after 11 a.m. on Saturday and laid a revolver on the counter and demanded money from the teller.

He then took off running.

Law enforcement from multiple agencies including the Wheeling Police, West Virginia State Police, Ohio County Sheriff’s Office, and Bridgeport and Martins Ferry Police searched the area for the suspect with help from the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources and the Wheeling Fire Department.

The FBI was also contacted.

Not long after the Wheeling Island robbery, police were informed that the WesBanco branch bank in the Ohio Valley Plaza in St. Clairsville was also robbed.

Authorities were told the suspect met the same description as the suspect from the Wheeling Island incident – a white male between five-feet, five inches and five feet to 10 inches in height wearing blue jeans a grey t-shirt, red baseball cap and glasses.
