Man accused of sexual assault at Buckeye Local
STEUBENVILLE Joseph Reed, 18, of County Road 15, Rayland, has been charged with two counts each of rape, sexual battery and gross sexual imposition following an investigation into an alleged incident last week involving a special-needs student at Buckeye Local High School, said Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla.
Abdalla said school district officials notified him about the alleged incident Friday afternoon.
The sheriff said Reed allegedly took the 16-year-old special-needs student into a locker room and sexually assaulted her. The alleged victim told a friend what happened and school officials were notified, Abdalla said. Both the alleged victim and her friend were interviewed, according to Abdalla said.
Abdalla said he interviewed Reed and Reed gave a written statement.
Prosecutor Jane Hanlin was notified of the incident and investigation, Abdalla said. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation was called to the locker room to gather evidence.
Abdalla gave credit to the Buckeye Local school officials for their quick notification.
