W.Va. man dies in Monroe County crash
SARDIS — A West Virginia man died early Friday following a single-vehicle crash in Monroe County, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Jeffrey S. Sampson, 49, of Grantsville was a passenger in a pick-up truck traveling north on Ohio 7 in Lee Township when the vehicle left the highway, struck an embankment and crashed into two trees shortly before 4 a.m., troopers said. Sampson, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the truck and died at the scene.
The driver, Edward H. Burrows, 30, also of Grantsville, left the crash scene and was located by police at a nearby gas station several hours later, the patrol said. He was taken to Marietta Memorial Hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries. Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.
