CADIZ — A 77-year-old Shadyside man may spend the rest of his life behind bars after being convicted of the rape of a minor.

Robert L. Eikleberry was arrested on March 17 when he was accused of having sexual relations with a child. Tuesday, he changed his previous innocent plea to guilty before Harrison County Common Pleas Judge T. Shawn Hervey, admitting to rape in the first degree.

Hervey sentenced him to life in prison. Eikleberry will be eligible for parole after 10 years.

According to prior reports, at Eikleberry’s preliminary hearing in late March, a taped interview with Cadiz police officers was shown in court. The video evidence showed Eikleberry confessing in detail to the charges against him.

Eikleberry was being held in the Jefferson County Jail in lieu of $2 million bond prior to his guilty plea.

Harrison County Prosecutor T. Owen Beetham represented the state in the case. Another warrant for Eikleberry has been issued out of Belmont County, also for felony rape in the first degree.
