GRETCHEN, Joseph, 89, of County Road 10, Adena, OH, died Friday, October 19, 2012, at Autumn Health Care in Adena.

He was born February 1, 1923, in Robyville, OH, son of the late Mike and Rose Szalai Gretchen.

He retired from Y&O Coal Co.; a Navy veteran, a Presbyterian by faith; a lifetime member of the American Legion in Adena; and loved going to Canada to fish with his buddies for the last 34 years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Ann Fador Gretchen; stepfather, Paul Nekich; three brothers, John, Mike “Meter” and George Gretchen; and two sisters, Annie Furby and Mary “Murph” Olszewski.

Surviving are his wife, Karen Kanoski Gretchen; a son, Joseph Frank Gretchen of Piedmont, OH; a stepson, Kris (Teresa) George of Adena; a daughter, Valli Michon Walker of Adena; a stepdaughter, Kim (Jeff) Miller of Barnesville, OH; a brother, Bob (Huella) Gretchen of Adena; two sisters, Tootsie Roski of Adena, and Kathryn (Frank) Lipus of Montana; and nine grandchildren.

Friends will be received to pay tribute to Joe and celebrate his life Tuesday, 4-9 p.m. at Borkoski Funeral Home, Adena, where the funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Barry Hall officiating. Burial in Olive Branch Cemetery, Harrisville, OH. Military honors will be conducted by the Adena American Legion at the cemetery.
