BREWSTER, Sophia Nicolozakes, 84, Morristown businesswoman, passed away Sunday morning, May 5, in a fatal fire at her business and home, Pick’s Place.
She was born one of 10 children on October 8, 1928 in Fairpoint, Ohio, daughter of the late Gust and Diamanta (Papadakis) Nicolozakes originally of Neohorio, Crete, Greece.
Sophia attended public school in Fairpoint, graduating in 1946 from St. Clairsville High School.
She was a member of the Church of Life Giving Fountain Greek Orthodox Church in Martins Ferry.
In January 1957, she bought Pick’s Place and made it into a landmark establishment on National Road. She was a hard worker and dedicated her life to the success of her business. She will always be respected by her many friends and patrons.
Sophia was an avid card player and no one could come close to her at a game of cinch. She loved holding card tournaments, New Year’s celebrations, wasted Wednesday during Jamboree, wild game feast.
She prided herself on carrying on yearly traditions and no one can ever forget those “hearty” slaps on the back during her annual Christmas sing- a- longs. She was one extremely tough gal that ran her bar with an iron fist on one side and a kind hand on the other.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, George (May 19, 2004), Stanley (October, 26, 2006), William “Himer” (February 18, 2007); and sisters, Wanda Butler (March 3, 2007), and Ann Sapounakis (April 2, 2010).
She leaves behind her only daughter, Cheryl Robinson of Morristown; three grandchildren, Kelly Robinson and wife, Kat, of Morristown, Pete Robinson of Columbus and Maria Lefevre and her husband, Doug of Springfield, VA; four loving great- grand children, Braden and Emma Robinson, and Dylan and Morgan Lefevre; her long time faithful employee, Judy Nester of Holloway. She will also be missed by her four sisters, Judy Tukesbrey of Deerfield, Ill., Mary Stewart of Columbus, Helen Vitakis (Chris) and Goldie Gonakis, both of Seven Hills; numerous nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will be received at Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m., and Thursday from 2-8 p.m. with Trisagion Service at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
Funeral Services will be Friday at 2:30 p.m. at the Church of the Life Giving Fountain Greek Orthodox Church in Martins Ferry, with Father John Kostas the celebrant. Burial follows in Union Cemetery, St. Clairsville.
